It looks like the Patriots are bringing back one of their best leaders. They’re expected to re-sign 11-time team captain Matthew Slater, according to ESPN’s Field Yates.

Terms of the reported deal weren’t immediately available.


ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported recently that Slater has been a regular presence at Gillette Stadium this offseason. The 37-year-old is viewed as the heart and soul of the team, and is respected around the league.

The special teams ace has been selected to 10 Pro Bowls.

Bill Belichick is prioritizing his veteran leaders at the start of free agency. Devin McCourty announced Sunday he’s returning for another season, and they re-signed Brian Hoyer Monday.

Though it’s only been three years since the Patriots’ last Super Bowl win, their roster has undergone an upheaval, including the departure of Tom Brady (you might have heard about that). With Josh McDaniels heading to Vegas — leaving the Patriots without any official coordinators — veteran leadership is paramount.

Dont’a Hightower, another stalwart of the most recent Super Bowl teams, is an unrestricted free agent as well.
