Patriots to open NFL season with Seahawks Super Bowl rematch

Ready for a Super Bowl 60 rematch?

The Patriots will get an early shot at revenge for the 29-13 thrashing they took from the Seattle Seahawks in that big game as they face their West Coast foes again to open the NFL season, according to a report from NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Mike Vrabel's squad will play in front of the 12th man on Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Seattle’s Lumen Field with the kickoff set for 8:20 p.m. ET.

The matchup will be the first Wednesday night season-opener since 2012 and continues the tradition of the Super Bowl Champion kicking off the year at their home field. The unusual choice of day accommodates a game between the Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers in Australia, which will air live in prime time Thursday night.

Despite the longstanding custom of the reigning champs opening the year, it's uncommon for the game to be a rematch of the previous year's big game. The last time the NFL scheduled the season opener this way was in 2016, offering fans a rematch of Super Bowl 50. The Seahawks, coincidentally, stomped the Denver Broncos in that championship, 43-8. The ensuing Week 1 game was much more exciting, but Seattle prevailed again.

Both teams will look quite different from the ones who walked off the field at Levi Stadium in February, but their quarterbacks and coaches remain the same. New England gunslinger Drake Maye, in particular, will look to redeem his Super Bowl 60 performance after a shoulder injury hampered his play in the championship. The rematch will also lack the big game's MVP; running back Kenneth Walker III signed a three-year, $45 million contract in free agency.
