In order to guarantee his full 2022 salary of $1.5 million, Travis Shaw needed to stay on the Red Sox' active roster for 45 days. He didn't make it.
According to a source, the Red Sox are designating Shaw for assignment after 20 games into the season. MassLive was first to report the move.
Shaw was supposed to be the left-handed complement for Bobby Dalbec at first base, but never found an offensive groove. He went hitless in his 19 at-bats with seven strikeouts.
The likely move to replace Shaw appears to be Franchy Cordero, who would need to be added to the 40-man roster. Cordero, who just returned to playing first base with Triple-A Worcester in recent days, is hitting .296 with a .913 OPS and three homers for the WooSox. All three of his homers have come off of right-handers.
The 8-12 Red Sox head to Baltimore to begin a three-game series at Camden Yards, Friday night.
