In return, the Red Sox are getting right-handed pitchers Richard Fitts, Greg Weissert and Nicholas Judice.

Verdugo spent the last four seasons in Boston after being acquired in the trade that sent Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Last year, he hit .264 with 13 home runs, 54 RBIs and a .745 OPS in 142 games.

Fitts, 23, was the Yankees' 12th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.com. He went 11-5 with a 3.48 ERA in 27 starts for Double-A Somerset last season and had 163 strikeouts in 152 innings.

Weissert, 28, split last season between New York and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. He made 17 relief appearances at the MLB level and had a 4.05 ERA in 20 innings.

Judice, 22, was an eighth-round pick in June. He was a senior at Louisiana-Monroe this year, posting a 3.74 ERA in 53 innings spread across 21 appearances (3 starts, 18 relief appearances).

This is the second trade new Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has made. Last month, he sent infielder Luis Urias to the Seattle Mariners for right-handed pitcher Isaiah Campbell.
