The Boston Red Sox made a trade Saturday, sending right-handed reliever John Schreiber to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for right-handed pitching prospect David Sandlin.

ESPN's Jeff Passan was the first to report the trade.
Schreiber, 29, spent the last two-plus seasons in Boston. He was stellar in 2022, posting a 2.22 ERA, 0.985 WHIP and 3.89 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 65 innings. He wasn't quite as effective in 2023, compiling a 3.86 ERA, 1.414 WHIP and 2.12 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 46.2 innings.
Sandlin, who turns 23 this week, was an 11th-round pick in 2022 out of the University of Oklahoma, where he helped lead the Sooners to the College World Series, where they ultimately lost to Ole Miss in the finals.
The Athletic's Keith Law recently ranked Sandlin as the Royals' No. 7 prospect coming off his first pro season. He showed off strikeout material at Low-A Columbia last season, recording 79 in 58.2 innings along with a 3.38 ERA. That earned him a promotion to High-A Quad Cities, where he made two starts before suffering a season-ending oblique injury.
