Nick Pivetta did his job, and then some. It didn't matter.
The Red Sox starter dominated one of the best lineups in the game - holding the Blue Jays to no runs on just one hit over six innings - but Marcus Semien made it all moot.
The Jays' second baseman took the first pitch Matt Barnes threw in the seventh inning and deposited it over the left field wall to hand the Sox a 1-0, Game 1 win in the teams' doubleheader at Rogers Centre.
The Red Sox best opportunity came in the sixth inning against Robbie Ray, putting Jonathan Arauz (hit) and Bobby Dalbec (walk) on first and second, respectively, with no outs. But Kiké Hernandez struck out, Alex Verdugo grounded into a fielder's choice and Xander Bogaerts popped out in foul ground.
After one more scoreless half inning from Pivetta, closing out his outing at 76 pitches, it set the stage for Barnes' one-pitch outing.
The only two hits for the Red Sox game from Kevin Plawecki and Arauz.
The Blue Jays head into Game 2 just one game ahead of the Jays in the loss column.
