The Boston Celtics are adding another big name to Joe Mazzulla’s coaching staff. According to Brian Robb of MassLive, Jeff Van Gundy has been hired as a senior consultant. Robb adds Van Gundy will be working in the Celtics’ basketball operations department and will spend time with both the NBA team and the Maine Celtics, Boston’s G League affiliate.
The 61-year-old spent 11 seasons as a head coach with stints in New York and Houston, finishing with a 430-318 record, reaching the playoffs nine times. Van Gundy helped guide the Knicks to the NBA Finals in 1999 but fell to the San Antonio Spurs.
After being fired by the Rockets after three seasons, Van Gundy transitioned to the broadcast booth, joining ESPN, where he spent the last 16 years before being let go earlier this year as part of company-wide layoffs.
Van Gundy has kept his foot in the coaching world since he departed from Houston, serving as head coach for Team USA at various international competitions. Van Gundy has previously worked with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown during the 2019 FIBA World Cup.
The Celtics have completely revamped their coaching staff, adding championship experience in Sam Cassell and Charles Lee. Van Gundy is the latest notable addition to Mazzulla’s staff and should serve as another valuable resource.
