Roman Anthony finally gets the call to the big leagues

Roman Anthony time is finally here. The Boston Red Sox called up the top prospect in baseball Monday afternoon ahead of their series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays.

Word of Anthony’s promotion first began to circulate courtesy of MassLive’s Chris Cotillo and WEEI’s own Rob Bradford, and then was confirmed by Anthony himself in a video shared to social media by MassLive Worcester Red Sox reporter Katie Morrison-O’Day.

Anthony’s close friend, Marcelo Mayer, also discussed Anthony’s promotion shortly after the news broke, saying it feels the same way it did when Mayer himself got called up just two weeks ago.

Anthony, who turned 21 in May, is expected to make his major league debut Monday night and will bat fifth, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. In a corresponding move, outfielder Wilyer Abreu is heading to the injured list.

Anthony, an outfielder, was hitting .289 with 10 home runs, 29 RBIs, 45 runs scored and a .913 OPS in 58 games with Triple-A Worcester this season.

Over the weekend, Anthony launched his latest highlight-worthy home run, a monstrous 497-foot grand slam.
