The final practice of Patriots training camp before the Indianapolis Colts roll into town was closed to the public. The team played in shells and shorts, rather than full pads, but the day wasn’t without its moments. Here’s what happened at practice Monday:
Catch of the day: Romeo Doubs
Wide receiver Romeo Doubs had the play of the day with Drake Maye during a hurry-up portion of 11-on-11 competitive team drills. Doubs leapt into the air for a 50/50 jump ball and came down with it secured for a touchdown, and it wasn’t just anybody in coverage on the route – All-Pro cornerback Christian Gonzalez was all over him. Doubs received hefty praise from his fellow receivers after the catch.
Doubs has had a relatively quiet training camp. He missed two days of practice last week with what head coach Mike Vrabel categorized as “happy” personal business. This particular play came not long after an overthrow to A.J. Brown, and it was a positive and much-needed moment for the first-team offense.
Will Campbell participates in full
Starting left tackle Will Campbell still donned a hefty brace on his left arm around the elbow area Monday, but he was a full participant in practice, including competitive team drills. Campbell was limited last week after stacking together a consistent camp thus far. Maye and the Patriots need Campbell healthy, as rookie Caleb Lomu is still just getting his feet wet as an NFL-caliber tackle.

Speaking of Lomu, he described the challenge he’s faced moving over to right tackle as a backup to 35-year-old Morgan Moses during this training camp, after playing left tackle throughout his college career:
“[It’s] definitely a little bit challenging. It’s throwing with a different hand, kicking with a different foot. But then, it's just playing tackle, the position I’ve played my whole life, and so few kicks, few practices, after that starts to feel a little more comfortable. But it's definitely a challenge at first.”
The Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan noted to Lomu that he won every 1-on-1 rep he took at left tackle Monday, which Lomu attributed to his college experience on the opposite side.
Carlton Davis back at practice, Christian Barmore out again
Cornerback Carlton Davis was back in his No. 7 jersey after missing two weeks with an injury, but he did not stick around on the field for 11-on-11 drills. Defensive tackle Christian Barmore missed his second straight practice after being absent for Friday’s scrimmage, (the team had both Saturday and Sunday off from practice).
2024 Draft class continues to dwindle
The Patriots released 2024 3rd-round pick offensive tackle Caedan Wallace to start the week, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. Wallace’s cut means just two of New England’s eight picks from that draft remain with the organization: quarterback Drake Maye, selected with the 3rd overall pick, and 6th-round cornerback Marcellas Dial.
Maye is an unquestionable success story, while Dial’s destiny is still undetermined. He played in all 17 games of his rookie campaign, but he tore his ACL in 2025 and spent the season on injured reserve.
The Patriots welcome the Colts for their first joint practice of the summer Tuesday morning. The two teams face off in a preseason game at Gillette Stadium Thursday night.
