Sam Kennedy apologizes for getting Roman Anthony's injury wrong

The Boston Red Sox have developed an interesting habit of seemingly being at odds with their star players regarding the severity of their injuries.

A few weeks ago on The Greg Hill Show, Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy refuted Greg Hill's report that outfielder Roman Anthony had a tear in his ring finger, saying that it was only a sprain. Anthony himself then refuted Kennedy's comments and confirmed Greg's report in an interview with WEEI's Rob Bradford.

Now it's ace pitcher Garrett Crochet's lat strain that is generating some mixed messages. Crochet told the Boston Globe on Wednesday that his injury is "a lot worse than what we thought." But then when chief baseball officer Craig Breslow was asked about those comments, he told MassLive that Crochet "continues to make good progress" and that there's nothing new in terms of the severity of the injury.

Kennedy joined The Greg Hill Show again Thursday morning and was asked to clarify what's going on with all these conflicting injury comments.

"Well, listen, I need to own up to my mistake," Kennedy said. "I mean, I was unequivocal in my response to you regarding Roman and his situation. Apparently, I missed that day at Harvard Medical School. I shouldn't be sitting here talking about a sprain. A sprain is a tear. I was reading off of a report that identified the sprain. Listen, Roman is doing everything he can to get back and get better. Putting timetables on baseball injuries is really, really hard. That's why we try not to do it. And then when we don't do that, it sounds evasive, and like we're dodging it. So, I apologize for my mistake there. I've communicated with Roman about that. That's all good. Most important is he's doing the work to getting back.

"In terms of Garrett, unfortunately, he's dealing with a lat issue. Again, I'll stop there. If anything, I can learn from my mistakes in terms of putting timetables or getting into details. That's not my role, and so I'm not going to do it. But I know it's killing him and killing Roman to not be out there, but hopefully they'll be able to get back out there soon enough and help us get this thing back on track."
