Seven years ago, Bill Belichick drafted Jimmy Garoppolo to be Tom Brady’s heir apparent, and frankly, didn’t even try to hide it.

“We know what Tom’s age and contract situation is,” Belichick said at the time. “I think you’re better being early rather than late at that position.”

As it turns out, the Patriots were early at that position — by six years. Brady has enjoyed an entire Hall of Fame career since Garoppolo was drafted, winning four Super Bowls, including three with the Patriots.

Belichick begrudgingly traded Garoppolo in October 2017. The Patriots are still looking for Brady's heir apparent (they drafted Mac Jones at No. 15 overall Thursday night).

In other words, Brady outlasted Garoppolo. Is there any doubt he’ll do the same to Kyle Trask?

The Buccaneers selected Trask, who was three years old when Brady won his first Super Bowl, with the No. 64 overall pick Friday. Trask put up big numbers at Florida and has a big arm.

But then again, so did Ryan Mallett.

With no immediate needs, it’s smart for the Buccaneers to take a quarterback at the end of the second round. But don’t expect Brady to just take Trask under his wing and accept his football mortality.

He’s now saying he would “definitely consider” playing past 45 years old.

Trask is never going to see the field.
