Triston Casas on contract extension: 'Nothing has changed'

Scott Boras is talking Bregman, offseason

FORT MYERS, Fla. - One of the biggest storylines heading into last year's spring training was whether or not the Red Sox could secure a contract extension for Triston Casas.

Casas made it clear that the Sox had approached him the weeks leading up to that exhibition season with an offer, one which he had no interest in agreeing to.

But by the time the regular season kicked off, the only extensions agreed to were that of Ceddanne Rafaela and Brayan Bello. Nothing for Casas. So, with the first day of spring training for the entire roster kicking off Monday, has anything changed?

"Nothing yet," Casas told WEEI.com. "Hopefully I get out there and put some numbers up so I can have a different answer for you. But right now, no. Nothing this offseason. I haven’t gotten any information about it from representation or any front office members."

When asked if he would still be interested in getting a deal done, the first baseman responded, "Yeah, of course. Nothing has changed. I want to be here forever, but forever is long for a lot of people. So it might end a little sooner than later, but it is still going to be a long time."

Casas, who will be heading into his first year of arbitration-eligibility after the 2025 season, is encouraged by the club's perceived ramped up commitment to spending, not only for his own situation but in terms of continued team building going forward.

The 25-year-old not only reveled in the recent Alex Bregman commitment, but also was quick to reference who might be available next offseason.

"The squad that we have right now is really talented and I know this upcoming free agent class is even more stacked," he said, highlighting a group that will include Vlad Guerrero Jr., J.T. Realmuto, Kyle Tucker, Dylan Cease, and Zac Gallen. "The future is bright internally as well as externally. There are going to be a lot of corresponding moves in the next couple of years, and some franchise-altering ones, in my opinion. It’s going to be interesting how the future shapes up, but hopefully mine is here."
