There will likely be a few big surprises in the NFL over the next few weeks at the start of free agency and Odell Beckham Jr. could be one of them.
What if the Browns look to trade away the star receiver coming off a torn ACL? Would the Patriots be interested?
Appearing on The Off Day podcast with Andy Hart and Ryan Hannable this week, NFL Network's Mike Giardi threw out the possibility as a player the Patriots could look to trade for.
“This is the precise time Bill [Belichick] likes to do these sorts of things — diminished asset," Giardi said. "They paid him a lot of guaranteed money up front already. He’s got to prove it now. ‘My team did really well without me last year.’ They went and pushed the Chiefs in the playoffs. He’s to me one of those guys that Bill might say, ‘We could get Odell Beckham for a [fourth-round pick] or one of our comp picks in the third round? OK. Like, we’re not going crazy in free agency or we targeted player X in free agency and his money…’ Corey Davis, perfect example. ‘We like Corey Davis at $12 million, but we don’t like him at $15 million. You know who is pretty good when he’s healthy? Odell. I know he’s a bit of a handful, but a lot of guaranteed money paid his way already, let’s take a shot at that.’ That to me is a quintessential Belichick-like maneuver to make a deal like that.”
Beckham Jr. has cap hits of $15 million the next three seasons.
