At just four days old, the Dallas Zoo's newborn giraffe was introduced to the public today.
Today, the zoo's born on the 4th of July baby, still unnamed for the time being, entered the Giants of the Savanna habitat with her mom Chrystal and the other female giraffes in the herd.
“No leads on the name yet, but we do have a list,” says Matt James, Senior Director of Animal Care at Dallas Zoo. “We’re working with our zoologist to really narrow it down to one name. As you can imagine there’s a lot of Independence Day themes in there.”
The baby came into the world weighing more than 100 pounds and standing about 5 1/2 feet tall. Eventually, she'll grow to about 17 feet.
“We’re already seeing her personality,” says Brown.
“Precious!” one woman exclaimed upon seeing the calf for the first time. Her husband seemed to echo the sentiment, calling the baby “absolutely adorable.”
“We’re so lucky to see her this early,” another spectator said. “Look at her little wobbly legs.”
“It’s awesome the kids get to see it,” said one parent.
