A Chicago area aerospace factory is at the forefront of an effort to kill the coronavirus in a very high-tech way.
Xenex Disinfecting Services Inc. and Astronics Corporation are joining forces to build a fleet of LightStrike Coronavirus-Killing Robots. They are being assembled in Astronics’ Waukegan plant, which employs about 300 people.
The LightStrike units employ germicidal UV rays and effectively zap germs.
“These are the most powerful UV robots on the face of the earth,” Xenex CEO Morris Miller said in a promotional video.
The demand for the robots has grown sixfold since the COVID-19 pandemic, Miller said.
The Xenex LightStrike robot sells for $125,000.
