Sheeran may be known for his masterful songwriting craft and ability to write global hits, but it was metal music that really influenced him as a kid. “I was really into death metal as a kid,” Ed told The Sun. “I listened to Cradle of Filth and Slipknot and all that stuff.”

“I learnt all those riffs on guitar as a kid,” Ed continued. “That’s something I’ve never thought about doing – but something I would not be opposed to creating.”

Cradle of Filth frontman and fellow Suffolk native Dani Filth caught wind of Sheeran’s comments and said “I’ll believe it when I see it,” in an Instagram post. However, he did offer some words of encouragement to Ed. “Fellow Suffolk lad could come good in the end. ‘Dracula’s Castle On The Hill’ anyone?” Filth wrote.

While we wait for the day Ed releases his metal album, the “Bad Habits” singer can celebrate his latest single debuting at number one in the U.K.

"Guys, 'Bad Habits' has debuted at #1 in the U.K. I’m absolutely over the moon, and did not expect this start at all," Sheeran wrote on Instagram. "I’ve been away for such a long time that I know it’s gonna take a bit to get back to normal, so was expecting this tune to build as the weeks went on, but to debut so high week one is phenomenal, and something that after a decade in this industry I do not take for granted."
