Health experts weigh in after woman reports having allergic reaction to COVID-19

COVID-19 can cause a variety of symptoms ranging from loss of taste and smell to shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.

However, one woman reported experiencing an uncommon allergy symptom after contracting the novel virus.

TikTok user @moeemoneeyy, whose real name is Morgan, went viral after she detailed her experience with coronavirus.

In the video, she explained that she got the virus from her mother and it was worse than she could have ever imagined.

"Well, I didn't know that I 'officially' had it until I woke up to my face being swollen like a f---ing balloon," she said.

Her mother called 911 and Morgan went to the hospital.

"I had to ride in the ambulance by myself. My face was having an allergic reaction to COVID. I'm allergic to COVID,” she said.

Her video racked up 4.6 million views and counting.

All the attention prompted her to post a follow-up video on TikTok to shed some more light about her experience.

"Essentially when you have a foreign substance in your body, aka COVID, your body produces histamines to fight off the infection," she explained.

“Well, when my body came into contact with COVID, it produced histamines. Unfortunately, my body produced way too many histamines to fight off COVID. And overproducing histamines causes swelling to the throat, face, eyes, lips—you name it, I had it—like an allergic reaction,” she said.

She revealed she’s taking anti-histamines to help regulate the histamine production in her body.

Of course, this begs the question: can you be allergic to COVID-19?

Allergists and infectious disease doctors told Health that it’s not possible, but it is possible -- as Morgan said -- to have symptoms that mimic an allergic reaction.

"You cannot become allergic to a virus, but many viruses commonly cause allergy-type symptoms because they can irritate the immune system in a way that mimics allergic reactions," Purvi Parikh, MD, an allergist with Allergy & Asthma Network, told the outlet.

These include hives, itchy rashes, and swelling.

If you experience any symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
