It has been a very rough year for Rachael Ray.
Aside from dealing with all the stresses of COVID, Ray lost her dog, her upstate New York home burned to the ground, and most recently, in August, Hurricane Ida’s end-run through the East Coast flooded her New York City apartment.

In a new interview with"Extra", the 53-year-old talk show host reflected back on managing through the "difficult" time.
"When I lost my dog I was so grateful that I could be with her the last several month of her life… She died in my arms," she told “Extra’s” Special Correspondent Tommy DiDario. "I felt guilty and grateful at the same time… People suffered actual human loss from COVID or because they couldn’t get care… and how many people died alone.”
Ray then described the devastation to her residences, beginning with the fire at her Lake Luzerne home in August 2020.
“The fire, the chimney burped under the roof, that’s just life," she said. "So many people wrote to me and reached out and said we lost so much too, I mean that’s just bad luck."
One year later, Ray and husband John M. Cusimano's Manhattan apartment faced the wrath of Hurricane Ida.
"The apartment, we weren’t there," she continued. "Leaks became bigger and the roof became worse and we thought we had repaired everything… then Ida… the whole apartment, was just raining inside.”
Despite suffering through so much loss, Ray said having gratitude for what she does have has helped her immensely.
When asked what she's most grateful for, Ray simply stated, "Being alive."
