What — no “Iron Man”?!
Samuel L. Jackson was a guest on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Wednesday night. And the affable Colbert was able to get a Top Five Films list out of the actor — a thing most actors don’t like to delve into, so as not to disappoint their fans or old producer friends.
But Samuel L. Jackson — being the cool, honest guy that he is — went right ahead and listed the five favorite movies he’s appeared in. And no, millions of “Pulp Fiction” fans, that one did not make the list.
Here were the five that did:
“The Long Kiss Goodnight”
“A Time to Kill”
“Jackie Brown”
“Red Violin”
“One Eight Seven”
All great movies, for sure — and let’s face it, any movie Jackson appears in is worth watching (“Snakes on a Plane,” anyone?). But fans might immediately think of Tarantino’s masterpiece, or any of the other Tarantino movies Jackson appeared in; or maybe “The Phantom Menace,” from the massively popular Star Wars series. Certainly “Do the Right Thing” is a classic.
The guess seems to be that the movies Jackson listed come from the busiest height of his career — 1996 thru 1998 — and, he was a lead in those films. The 72-year-old actor’s latter-day career has seen him as mostly a character actor in supporting roles, not to mention his frequent TV commercials and more.
And as AOL points out, four of the five do carry “Fresh” ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, with all of them having favorable audience scores.
Jackson listed some of his own favorites in general too, including “The Godfather” and the excellent, 1992 John Woo-directed action epic, “Hard Boiled.”
Jackson further threw water on that standard talk show answer from actors about how “I never watch my own movies.”
Said Jackson to Colbert, “Some actors lie to you about that. They watch their movies. It’s a ‘watch me’ business, that’s why we’re here. If I'm channel surfing and I haven't found anything I want to watch, or not specifically looking for something, and I pass something I'm in, I stop and watch it.”
Gotta love Samuel L. Jackson.
