Legendary actor Val Kilmer is telling his life story in an upcoming documentary titled, “Val.”
The Amazon Studios feature explores the often misunderstood life of the “Top Gun” and “Batman Forever” star, 61, as he recovers from cancer, Today reports. Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2015 and underwent a tracheotomy that altered his ability to speak.
In the documentary, Kilmer shares over 40 years worth of videos shot from a 16mm shot while at home and on the set of his legendary films.
“I was recently diagnosed with throat cancer. I’m still recovery,” a narrator says on behalf of Kilmer. He continues, “It is difficult to talk and be understood, but I want to tell my story more than ever.”
The trailer shows Kilmer sitting down for an interview and speaking slowly through a voice box device. Subtitles appear on the bottom of the screen to help Kilmer through his difficulty speaking. “I’ve tried to see the world one piece of life,” he says.

Kilmer has starred in a vast array of blockbuster films, such as the 1993 American Western film “Tombstone” and the 1995 action film “Heat” with Al Pacino.
The documentary also features home videos with notable actors in their younger years including Sean Penn and Kevin Bacon as they chat backstage during the 1983 run of the trio's Broadway flop "Slab Boys."
The Amazon Studios documentary "Val" is directed by Leo Scott and Ting Poo.
Amazon Studios will release “Val” in theaters on July 23, 2021, and on Prime Video on August 6, 2021.
