6 rings: Reacting to Eliot Wolf’s NFL Combine press conference
With all of the negative feelings and press towards Patriots quarterback Mac Jones over the course of the last several seasons, his former teammate Brian Hoyer took a moment to stick up for him.
In a guest appearance on NFL Network's Good Morning Football, Hoyer was asked about the New England's new era under head coach Jerod Mayo and what the team should do with the No. 3 overall pick:
"It's a new regime, right? First and foremost, I'm excited about Jerod Mayo." Hoyer said of Mayo being tabbed as the next man in charge. "Having played with Jerod, having seen him grow as a coach. Excited for his opportunity. I don't think there was probably a better fit to have someone come in after Bill [Belichick] than Jerod. He knows the culture, he played in it, and he's been there for the past few years."
"Look there's a lot of different [ways] that they can go," he said of them holding the third overall pick. "I think obviously the number one question is always going to be with the quarterback. I'm gonna stick up for my guy Mac [Jones]. I know that he's kinda got a raw deal the past few years. So, you know, with that third pick they have an option... you're in line for one of the top three guys but also, you know, being a quarterback guy myself and looking at a guy like Marvin Harrison Jr., I mean you pair him up-- I know what Mac's capable of. I witnessed it his rookie year, and I don't know if there's been a receiver that's come out in recent times that's more prepared. Obviously, he has the DNA, and he's gone out here and proven it."
Hoyer said he heard from Jones recently, however it wasn't about the Patriots' decision at quarterback.
Johnny Manziel, Hoyer's former teammate in Cleveland, said on Shannon Sharpe's podcast 'Club ShayShay' last week that the Browns' quarterback room wasn't 'a home' when he was there because of the way Hoyer treated him. Hoyer said Jones texted him the clip and wrote, "Hey, funny I didn't get this treatment as a rookie."
"I was kind of apathetic towards him I would say," Hoyer explained of his relationship with Manziel back in 2014. "I didn't go out of my way to, you know, be a jerk to him, but in the same sense I was trying to win this job and go out and perform the best I could."
