With less than a week until the season begins, one of the Patriots’ biggest offseason storylines remains unresolved: Christian Gonzalez and his potential record-setting contract extension.
By now, everybody knows what’s going on. Gonzalez, who is entering his fourth season with the Patriots after being selected 17th overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, is extension-eligible for the first time in his career and is seeking a contract that will make him the highest-paid cornerback in the league.
Last week, Patriots executive vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf said the team has made an offer that would make Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in the league and in team history. However, it’s unclear how the Patriots’ offer is structured and how much of it is guaranteed.
With the 2026 season now just days away, and the Patriots set to open in Seattle against the Seahawks in a rematch of Super Bowl 60, have the talks between Gonzalez and the Patriots created any sort of distraction? Head coach Mike Vrabel discussed that during his weekly sit-down with The Greg Hill Show on WEEI (full interview below).
“No. When Christian was rehabbing, he was where he was supposed to be when he was supposed to be there. Talked about his professionalism. I can’t speak for the rest of the team and how they feel,” Vrabel said. “From a coaching staff standpoint, it’s this: who is available each day, and we go about making a practice plan, or this is what the reps are going to be this day. We deal with all different kinds of things each and every day about who is available and who is not available. So I can only speak for myself, and it hasn’t been a distraction. I try to coach everybody that is here each and every day.”
Vrabel said last week that he “understands that this is probably something that’s difficult” when asked about Gonzalez expressing frustration with how the negotiations have unfolded. Still, he doesn’t believe the contract situation has fractured his relationship with the star cornerback.
“Nope. Not for me. I hope not. I coach him, I talk to him, communicate with him. That’s the only relationship that I can speak on,” Vrabel said. “I’ve said how much respect I have for Christian as a player and as a person. I’ve gotten to know him over the years that I’ve been here.”
All eyes will now shift to Gonzalez and his availability against the Seahawks in Week 1. The 24-year-old has remained non-committal, and it remains unclear whether he will play under his current contract, which carries a base salary of roughly $2.26 million this season.
Vrabel, though, says the Patriots will be prepared either way.
“We’ll have multiple game plans based on what the down and distance is, what personnel they are in, how the game may unfold,” he said. “We have to be flexible and be willing and ready to adjust. That’ll never change.”
