Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy has been named an assistant coach for Canada's men's hockey team for the 2022 Olympics in Beijing, Hockey Canada announced Monday.
Lightning coach Jon Cooper has been named the team's head coach, while Islanders coach Barry Trotz and Golden Knights coach Pete DeBoer join Cassidy as assistants in an impressive collection of some of the NHL's elite coaches.
This will be the first international coaching gig for Cassidy, who grew up in Ottawa. Cassidy also became a U.S. citizen in 2020 and said last season that he would be interested in coaching for either Canada or the United States in the Olympics.
With Canada, Cassidy will join forces with Bruins general manager Don Sweeney, who was previously named an assistant general manager for the team.
They won't be the only Bruins on Team Canada, as Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron are expected to make the team as well.
NHL participation in the Beijing Games has not yet been finalized, but all signs point towards it happening. The league sat out the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, making them the first Olympics without the NHL since 1994.
The NHL has already built an Olympic break into its 2021-22 season schedule. The Olympics are set to take place from Feb. 4-20.
