Bruins defenseman Kevan Miller has announced his retirement in a post on Instagram.
Miller, 33, played seven seasons with the Bruins. He has battled serious injuries for the last couple, most notably a broken kneecap suffered in April 2019 that he wound up rebreaking and needing multiple surgeries on.
He missed the entire 2019-20 season as a result and missed time this past season while managing the knee as well. He signed a one-year deal before last season and wound up playing 28 regular-season games and four playoff games.
Injury struck again in the first round against the Washington Capitals, when Dmitry Orlov caught him up high on a hit, resulting in a concussion that ended Miller's postseason. Miller said after the season that he was getting close to a return before the Bruins were eliminated by the Islanders.
Miller cites his health as the main reason for his retirement, writing, "Although my spirit for the game is there, unfortunately my body isn’t. My overall health and my family are now the priority. This was not an easy decision to make but it’s time to hang up my skates."
Miller, a native of Santa Clarita, California, signed with the Bruins in 2011 on an amateur tryout contract after a four-year career at the University of Vermont. He spent two-plus seasons with AHL Providence before getting called up in Nov. 2013.
Miller played a total of 352 games for the Bruins, registering 13 goals and 58 assists. He added 33 playoff games with a goal and six assists.
