The Patriots have a successful track record when it comes to undrafted free agents: Malcolm Butler, J.C. Jackson, David Andrews, Jakobi Meyers and Brandon Bolden are just a few who come to mind.

Could D’Eriq King be next?

The Patriots signed the Miami quarterback Sunday, and plan to use him in an unconventional way. “I talked to Matt Groh, and he was excited,” King told Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson. “I’m thankful for the opportunity. He told me I’ll do a little bit of everything -- receiver, quarterback, running back -- whatever I can do to stick.”

Notably, the Patriots took a similar approach with a seventh-round quarterback out of Kent State, Julian Edelman, who wound up becoming one the most productive receivers in franchise history and a Super Bowl MVP. King began his college career as a wide receiver before transferring to Miami in 2020 and moving over to quarterback.

As a wideout, King caught 58 passes for 492 yards over his first two collegiate seasons at Houston. He passed for 2,686 yards and 26 touchdowns as the Hurricanes’ starting QB in 2020, while adding 538 rushing yards and 16 receiving yards.

Last season, King played just three games due to a shoulder injury, which prevented him from participating in the NFL Combine.

"I want to do what I can to be seen and have the opportunity to make the team," he said. "I’m going to try to get on special teams, too.”

That’s probably music to Bill Belichick’s ears. But remember: developing projects takes time. Edelman didn't break out as a receiver until 2013, his fifth professional season.

Even if King contributes, there could be a long road ahead. But his athleticism and diverse skillset is a cause for excitement.
