The Patriots are bringing back their most promising young linebacker. Ja’Whaun Bentley is closing in on a new contract with New England after testing free agency, according to ESPN’s Mike Reiss and Field Yates.
Bentley, a 2018 fifth-round pick, is coming off a career year. He led the team with 108 tackles and also posted personal bests in tackles for loss (five), quarterback hits (five) and forced fumbles (3).
At 6-foot-2, 255 pounds, Bentley is a classic big-bodied linebacker who fits into the Patriots’ system. He’ll likely be entrusted to lead a possibly overhauled linebacking corps last season, especially if veteran Dont’a Hightower leaves via free agency.
Earlier this week, the Patriots traded pass-rusher Chase Winovich to the Browns for smaller linebacker Mack Wilson, leading some, including NBC Sports Boston's Tom Curran, to speculate they'll try and get faster at the position. They allowed 158 yards on the ground over the final five games of the season.
Still, Bentley’s presence should shore up middle of the Patriots defense. He’s been one of Bill Belichick’s better draft picks in recent years.
The Patriots have also re-signed veterans Devin McCourty, James White, Matthew Slater, Brian Hoyer, Nick Folk and James Ferentz in what has been a quiet free agency period.
