6 rings: Bill O'Brien leaving Patriots, will be Ohio State's offensive coordinator in 2024
The Patriots' search for a new special teams coordinator under head coach Jerod Mayo continues on.
According to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, New England interviewed former Giants special teams coordinator Thomas McGaughey for the position.
McGaughey began coaching in 1998 with the Houston Cougars, and got his NFL start in 2001 with the Kansas City Chiefs in the Bill Walsh Minority Fellowship program. The 50-year-old has served as the special teams coordinator for the University of Houston (2003-2004), LSU Tigers (2011-2013), New York Jets (2014), San Francisco 49ers (2015), Carolina Panthers, and most recently the New York Giants from 2018-2023. McGaughey was the assistant special teams coordinator with the Giants from 2007-2010, winning Super Bowl XLII with the club.
He was fired by head coach Brian Daboll on January 8, 2024.
McGaughey's interview marks the third in Jerod Mayo's search for a new special teams coordinator. He's reportedly also spoken with (or will speak to), Falcons' Marquice Williams and Rams' Jeremy Springer.
