jones and mego: Bill o'brien out as offensive coordinator!
As the Patriots' defensive coordinator search continues on, they're adding an in-house candidate to the mix.
According to CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones, New England plans to interview defensive line coach DeMarcus Covington for their vacant position.
Covington has worked with head coach Jerod Mayo on the Patriots' defensive staff since 2017.
In November of 2022, the then-33-year-old was named to NFL.com's list of young NFL coaches to watch as potential head coaches and coordinators down the line. Covington worked as the defensive coordinator of the American team at the Reese's Senior Bowl last January.
"Obviously that’s on the horizon for me of what I want to do," the DL coach said last month when asked about his potential desire to one day be a head coach. "I get in this profession to, again, try to impact men. That’s what we try to do. So, as we go through this, the steps of being a position coach, coordinator to head coach — obviously want to lead a team. That is definitely one of my goals."
Interviewing for, and potentially landing, a defensive coordinator gig gets him one step closer to that goal.
While many see Covington as the favorite to land the job, it's been reported that the Patriots will also interview Panthers LBs coach Tem Lukabu, Broncos DBs coach Christian Parker, and Saints LBs coach Michael Hodges.
