The Patriots re-signed Hoyer, 37, to a two-year, $4 million deal ahead of last season, with $3 million in guarantees. Cutting Hoyer will cost $1.64 million against the Patriots' salary cap in 2023, according to Spotrac.

Hoyer, who had previous stints with the Patriots from 2009-11 and 2017-18, entered last season as the backup to starter Mac Jones, but was surpassed on the depth chart due to the emergence of rookie Bailey Zappe.

Hoyer started the Week 4 loss to the Packers in Green Bay, but was relieved by Zappe after suffering a concussion. Hoyer was placed on injured reserve on October 6 and was inactive for the remainder of the season. He finished the year 5-of-6 for 37 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

For his career, the former Michigan State standout has a 59.4% completion rate with 10,668 yards, 53 touchdowns and 35 interceptions. In addition to the his stints with the Patriots, he has also played for the Cardinals, Browns, Bears, 49ers and Colts.
