Red Sox make trade for first baseman Garrett Cooper

Triston Casas elaborates on his injury

According to a major league source, the Red Sox have agreed to a trade with the Cubs that will secure the services of right-handed-hitting first baseman Garrett Cooper.

The Red Sox will be sending cash considerations to Chicago, who designated Cooper for assignment earlier this week after the 33-year-old played in 13 games. Craig Mish of the Miami Herald was first to report the deal, while MassLive was first with the compensation.

Cooper spent the majority of his eight-year with the Marlins, making the National League All-Star team in 2022. He was dealt from Miami to the Padres at last season's trade deadline, finishing with a .251 batting average and .724 OPS with 17 homers between the two teams.

After signing a minor-league deal with the Cubs, Cooper entered the season sharing time at first base with Michael Busch. But the combination of Busch excelling and the desire to call-up prospect Matt Mervis made the veteran expendable.

While the Red Sox will have to clear a 40-man roster spot to fit in Cooper, he will be expected play a significant amount at first base in the absence of the injured Triston Casas. Bobby Dalbec has been getting the majority of the at-bats since Casas - who could be out as much as nine weeks with torn cartilage in his rib cage - went on the injured list.

Cooper has also spent time in the outfield, playing two games there during his recent stint with the Cubs.
