Lou Merloni was right: The Red Sox were not content with their outfield after trading away Alex Verdugo.

According to multiple reports, Boston is acquiring outfielder Tyler O'Neill from the St. Louis Cardinals. Jon Heyman was the first to report the trade.

The Boston Globe's Alex Speier reports that the Red Sox are sending pitching prospects Nick Robertson and Victor Santos to the Cardinals.

UPDATE: The Red Sox have now officially announced the trade.

O'Neill, 28, is a two-time Gold Glove Award winner who has played mostly left field during his six seasons in St. Louis, but also a little bit of center and right field.

O'Neill's best offensive season came in 2021, when he had 34 home runs and 80 RBIs with a .286/.352/.560 slash line for a .912 OPS.

He has not been able to reach those heights since, though, in part because of a slew of injuries over the last two seasons. Last season, he played 72 games and hit .231 with nine home runs, 21 RBIs and a .715 OPS. He missed time with a lower back strain.

O'Neill is in his final arbitration year and could become a free agent after this upcoming season.
