With Bill Belichick set to embark on a key offseason of roster rebuilding, his right-hand man in personnel matters may not be around to help him through the process.
According to ESPN, the Texans have requested permission to speak with Patriots Director of Player Personnel Nick Caserio regarding the team’s open GM position. This comes after a previous report indicated the Panthers have made a similar request.
This is not the first time the Texans have pursued Caserio, the previous attempt coming in the summer of 2019, which led to tampering charges from New England. The Texans gave coach Bill O’Brien GM duties last season, but he was fired early this fall and the team went without a GM this season.
Former Patriots staffer Jack Easterby was part of the pursuit of Caserio as a member of the Texans organization in 2019 and remains a key voice in the Houston organization this time around as well.
Caserio has been on Belichick’s staff since 2001, holding a wide variety of roles with the team in both scouting and coaching. Belichick has often said Caserio wears as many hats and has as unique a role as anyone in the NFL. He’s been New England’s Director of Player Personnel since 2008, despite being pursued for various other roles across the NFL in the last decade-plus.
