Count Nick “Fitzy” Stevens as a big fan of new Patriots wide receiver Javon Baker.
Fitzy and Andy Hart were live on WEEI Saturday afternoon as the Patriots made their two fourth-round picks. Fitzy wasn’t thrilled about offensive guard Layden Robinson at 103 overall, but he was ecstatic about New England landing Baker seven picks later.
“Oh, yes! Yes! Yes, yes, yes,” Fitzy yelled. “Hell yeah, Eliot Wolf. You’re my guy.”
Fitzy declared Baker “a steal,” saying he wanted the Patriots to draft him at pick 68 in the third round, and went on to explain why.
“A couple months ago, there was this long, like 1,000-word tweet,” Fitzy said, “and it was this whole breakdown on how if you’re looking for the next Puka Nacua, if you’re looking for the wide receiver steal of the draft, it is hands-down Javon Baker. He averaged 22 yards a catch last year, 53 receptions, like 1,150 yards and seven touchdowns. Wins on the outside, wins over the middle, 6-2, 205 or 210. Big dude, fast enough, great hands.”
Baker clearly has plenty of confidence in himself, too, as evidenced by his first comments to the New England media during his press availability.
“Come to the home stadium and bring your popcorn,” Baker said. “That’s all I can tell you all. Bring your popcorn. I make people in wheelchairs stand up.”
At the very least, it certainly seems like Baker is going to be a fun player to follow as he tries to help elevate a Patriots offense that has also added quarterback Drake Maye and fellow wide receiver Ja’Lynn Polk in this draft, as well as offensive linemen Caedan Wallace and Layden Robinson.
