(WWJ) -- Moon gazing just became moon glazing!
Krispy Kreme has released a new space-themed doughnut to celebrate the supermoon that will appear in the night sky on Thursday, June 24.
The “Strawberry Supermoon Doughnut” honors the moniker given to this particular phase of the moon, which falls during strawberry harvesting season in the northeastern region of the country.
"The super-cool limited-edition treat is made to look like Krispy Kreme's own 'supermoon,' filled with strawberry Kreme, dipped in strawberries and Kreme icing, and topped with graham cracker 'moon dust,'" Krispy Kreme said in a press release.
When the moon is full as it makes its closest pass to Earth, it is known as a supermoon.
At the point when the moon is closest to Earth — known as perigree — the moon can be as much as 14% closer to Earth than at apogee, when the moon is farthest from our planet.
The full moon appears much larger in diameter and shines 30% more moonlight onto the Earth because of its closer proximity.
This supermoon will become completely full at 2:40 p.m. EST on Thursday afternoon, though it won't be fully visible in Michigan until “moonrise” around 9:37 p.m.
