Touching on London’s roots, Palmer acknowledged how similar to the storyline of You People, London’s mother is Black and her father is Jewish.

While she was primarily raised by her mother, she grew up as the “only biracial” member on that side. However, that didn’t alter how she viewed herself. She shared how her mother instilled in her that no one is ever going to see her as anything but Black. “No matter what I look like and no matter what I’m mixed with, I am a Black woman,” she said.

While she didn’t have to navigate two different cultures while growing up, her being from a melting-pot, big city like Los Angeles, it helped her familiarize herself with people from all different backgrounds.

And speaking of “crazy a** in-law stories,” You People, out now on Netflix, is the perfect illustration of the struggles behind mixing cultures.

Lauren shared that going into it, she was a bit hesitant to do the film but after meeting with Kenya Barris, Jonah Hill, and Kevin Misher for lunch and a deep meditation session, she gave herself the go-ahead and began working on the film.

She hopes that if viewers don’t take anything else away, they should definitely understand “awareness” and how as people we are all different and should be more accepting of that.
