CENTERPORT, N.Y. (WCBS 880) — A Long Island, New York family received an early Halloween scare last month when they spotted a snake slithering around in their basement.
“Open the door, that's where it was. It caught the corner of my eye, I had to bend down and take a look at it,” said the Centerport homeowner, John.

He said the snake, which was fairly small, got stuck in a glue trap on the floor but, he was still shocked to see the reptile in his home.
“I never saw a snake in my home. I've only seen them twice in the wild,” John told WCBS 880.
Despite the shock, he said he was not scared, as he has seen plenty of wild animals roaming around the neighborhood.
“I wasn't freaked out or scared I think because we moved in here just a little over a year ago and since, we've had so many animals –foxes and moles and deer,” he said.
John said his 22-year-old stepson, Tyler, who lives in the home, eventually came to the snake’s aide, using oil to remove the glue residue from the reptile’s scales.
WCBS 880’s Sophia Hall asked if they were afraid the snake might be venomous, but Tyler said the snake – an eastern milk snake – is actually harmless.
“I did a little bit of research on them. They don't really have fangs, they have kind of like baby teeth, not really enough to break the skin,” Tyler said.
The snake they found is actually very young and may grow to be 3-feet long.
Tyler said rather than releasing the snake into the wild, he has decided to keep the snake as a pet. He already named it Orochimaru, after a fictional character from the popular Japanese animated series, “Naruto.”
