As she's stated before, 2000s Pop-Punk princess Avril Lavigne was single but in no way ready to mingle when she decided to make a return with her new album Love Sux this year. In all of the lead-up, we learned that she did in fact stumble into love during the writing and recording process, finding an "immediate connection" with fellow songwriter MOD SUN.

She "tried to resist it, hard," says the 37-year-old singer, who was previously married to Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger and Sum 41's Deryck Whibley, in essence, renouncing romance before ever meeting her new flame in the studio.

Now, with the drop of her seventh studio album, Love Sux, on Travis Barker's DTA Records imprint, (her first collection of songs since 2019's Head Above Water) just hours away, Avril has given fans even more to chew, telling PEOPLE that she had sworn off relationships entirely in 2020. "I was like, 'I need a break from men,'" Avril says with a laugh. "Then two days later that all went out the window!"

That was the moment she met Derek Smith, better known as MOD SUN, during a songwriting session, and the rest we have all gotten to see play out in front of our eyes. "I just followed my heart," Lavigne admits. A decision that has proven fruitful not only in romance but creativity as well. Lavigne was featured on MOD SUN's 2021 single "Flames," and he was also on hand to help co-write and co-produce a number of songs on her new Love Sux.

"We bonded over music," Avril explains. "I was getting out of a big relationship, and for the first time in my life, I thought I should probably be single. I got together with [Mod Sun] to write a song. We just clicked. I was like, 'Should you be doing this?' It was fun and exciting, and I decided, 'F*** it. Life's short.' I'm a Libra. I love love."

There's apparently a whole lotta Lavigne coming at fans this year. The new release, she says, was originally slated to be a double album in a recent interview on Kyle Meredith With… “I have some favorites that didn’t even make the album,” Lavigne revealed. “I literally could put out another record right after this one.” Avril added in a chat with Billboard that “the next project I feel like, right now, would be an extension of this. This feels so good, and I have so much material, that I would want to continue.”
