However, 24 hours later, strangers came to the rescue as they rallied and raised more than $170,000 for her and her three daughters.
In an interview with CNN, Kelly sat on the only piece of furniture left in her home as she was informed about the significant dollar amount. The mother-of-three explained she was speechless.
“I just want to tell everybody thank you so much,” Kelly said as she wiped away the tears, adding, “I’m still in denial.”
Back in 2020, the 32-year-old lost her job as a card dealer when the COVID-19 pandemic caused casinos to shut down across the United States. Data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities confirms that she is one of the more than 11 million Americans behind in rent.
“I had no idea what we were going to do,” Kelly said.
In dire need of a solution, the mother created a GoFundMe page hoping that she could raise $2,000 in order to pay back the rent that she owed. She never expected that in the matter of a day, she would receive more than $172,000 from roughly 2,700 donors.
Most of the donations were smaller bills like $10 or $20, but one donation was a whopping $15,000.
Per the outlet, she plans to put the rest of her money into a savings account for her and her three girls.
“It gave me a lot of hope,” she said. “And I just want to make sure I do the best that I can to help the next person that is in my same situation.”
