The ad via Instagram stated, "the life lessons we learn about race in school aren't always in the lesson plan, but they are the lessons we carry with us." The six-week long campaign will provide resources, videos and more aimed at bridging the gap between mental health and Black students.
According to the press release, The Unspoken Curriculum's aim is to "advocate for meaningful change in the classroom by rethinking and reforming the lessons Black students learn in school" and also "inspire youth to feel confident and empowered to talk about their personal experiences in the classroom, protect their mental health, and seek support when they need it."
Henson also explained, "what is taught in the classroom can be very different from what is learned, and that disparity has detrimental effects on the growth and mindset of Black students. With The Unspoken Curriculum, we aim to create space to talk about the Black student experience, break the stigma that comes with talking about these real issues, and improve access to solutions. This is an opportunity for all of us to rethink the lessons Black students are learning in our education system." For more information on The Unspoken Curriculum or the Boris L. Henson Foundation, visit their website.
