Yabba dabba doo!
“The Flintstones” is getting an update.
Fox is developing an animated sequel series to the beloved ‘60s cartoon about “the modern stone age family” living in the fictional town of Bedrock, reported Variety.
The series, entitled “Bedrock,” will take place 20 years following the events of the original and will center around Fred and Wilma Flintstone’s daughter, Pebbles.
Actress and director Elizabeth Banks will executive produce and also supply the voice of Pebbles.
According to a description for the reboot, the show will follow as Fred sets to retire and twentysomething Pebbles starts on her own career path.
"As the Stone Age gives way to a shiny and enlightened new Bronze Age, the residents of Bedrock will find this evolution harder than a swing from Bamm-Bamm's club," read the plot summary, per EW.
“Bedrock” will be written and co-executive produced by Lindsay Kerns who previously wrote “Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous,” and “DC Super Hero Girls,” among others.
“Long before the Simpsons and Springfield, the Griffins and Quahog or even when the Belchers started serving burgers on Ocean Avenue, there were the Flintstones and Bedrock,” Michael Thorn, president of entertainment for Fox Entertainment, said.
“Their imprint on the animation universe is undeniable and the idea of adapting it for today’s audience is a challenge we here at Fox are very much looking forward to taking on with Warner Bros., Elizabeth and Lindsay. No pressure whatsoever, really.”
The original series premiered in 1960 and aired for six seasons on ABC, becoming television’s first animated primetime program.
“The Flintstones are the first family of primetime animation,” added Peter Girardi, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming at Warner Bros. Animation. “Elizabeth and Lindsay have a brilliant take on these characters, and Fox and Brownstone are the perfect partners to bring them back to primetime. This is going to rock, sorry.”
Throughout the years, there have been multiple “Flintstones” spinoffs, specials and television films. In addition, there have been two live-action films, “The Flintstones” in 1994 and its 2000 sequel “The Flintstones in Viva Rock Vegas.”
It is unclear who will voice other key characters such as Fred and Wilma Flintstone, or Barney, Betty and Bamm-Bamm Rubble.
