Witnesses looking for dinner ingredients brushed dangerously close to the python. Grocery employees tried to keep the section with the snake clear of shoppers.

As you'd only expect in Australia, one of the store's customers moonlights as a part-time snake catcher.

"It just wanted to say hello," Helaina Alati told Guardian Australia. "Dozens of people must have walked past it."

Alati raced home to grab equipment before returning to the store, trapping the snake and retuning it to the great outdoors.

"It was chill, and not aggressive at all," Alati told reporters. "It wasn't in a defensive position. It slithered right into the bag. I'm used to seeing snakes in weird places, but I wouldn't expect it to be in a Woolworths."
