Marcy Sterlis was walking alone along Race Point Beach in Provincetown last Thursday when the coyote got a little too close for comfort.

“I sat down to put my sneakers back on and as I was getting up, I look over and this coyote was four or five feet from me,” Sterlis told Boston 25.

Sterlis screamed and shook a stick at the coyote, but the animal wouldn't go away, circling her for at least 10 minutes.

The coyote finally backed off when some fishermen in a nearby boat, who captured cellphone video of the tense encounter, pulled up closer to the beach and started banging the vessel after hearing Sterlis calls for help.

“I pulled up close enough, started banging my ore on the side of the boat. That's when he started to run away," Captain William Kelley told the news outlet.

Sterlis swam out to Kelley's boat to safety and was then brought back to her car.

"First mate Andrew DeCarton and Captain Kelley are the fishermen that rescued me, had me wade out to their boat and brought me back to safety at the swimming area near the lifeguard stand at Race Point," Sterlis wrote on Facebook. "Major props to these guys for hearing my screams and responding - this coyote was relentless, and I don’t know what I would have done without them."

Despite the scare, Sterlis said it won't stop her from going back out to enjoy the Cape Cod National Seashore.
