Dan Aykroyd and Donna Dixon announced that they are separating -- with an important caveat.

The couple has been together for nearly four decades. They released a joint statement about the split to People: "After 39 years as a couple we are now on separate life paths. We remain legally married, co-parents, co-workers and business partners. This is our choice in loving friendship."

After having been briefly engaged to actress Carrie Fisher, Aykroyd, 69, met Dixon, 64, on the set of the 1983 comedy, “Doctor Detroit.” The two were then married that same year.
Following that, the couple worked together on a number of films including “Twilight Zone: The Movie,” “Spies Like Us,” “The Couch Trip,” and “Exit to Eden.” And as People further reported, the two had three daughters together – Danielle (known professionally as singer-songwriter Vera Sola), 32, Belle, 28, and Stella, 24.
In a 2014 interview, Aykroyd praised Dixon as a partner.
"You gotta find the right person, look them in the eye, have them look back, and know their soul," said the Emmy Award winner. "She's a Southern woman who is understanding and doesn't mind dealing with the boys from time to time. I call her the White Goddess. And I'm the Green Demon."
While Dixon has been mostly out of the limelight for the 20 years, save for a few TV appearances, Aykroyd has been active on TV, and most recently appeared in and helped pen the hit movie, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.”
