It’s hard to think of Kristin Davis as anyone other than Charlotte York Goldenblatt, the role she so perfectly captured as Carrie Bradshaw’s friend on “Sex and the City."

But had a casting director or two changed their minds, we might be thinking of her as one of the “Friends.”

As Davis sat down with James Corden on “The Late Late Show” the other night, she revealed a fun factoid for “Friends” fanatics – Davis auditioned for the role of Monica on the hit sitcom.

“I think I was about one of like 8,000 young ladies who read for Monica," said Davis.

Needless to say she didn’t get the role. And she found out that Courteney Cox did in a surprising way.

As Entertainment Weekly reported, Cox and Davis were friends before "Friends," and one day, upon exclaiming excitement over landing a prime part on a pilot, Cox asked if Davis would want to go car shopping with her. Porsche car shopping, to be exact.

Davis correctly ascertained it must be some kind of gig. Though she didn’t find out exactly what that gig was until later.

Of course things turned out just fine for Davis. She did get a few guest spots on “Friends” as Erin, a woman Rachel and Monica attempt to set up with Joey.

Maybe it’s good she didn’t get the Monica part, because the Erin spots were stressful enough for Davis.

"I remember losing sleep,” said Davis. “Partly because of the live audience, but partly because you're in this world that has been created that is so alive and so specific, and you're trying to make sure you're fitting yourself in there properly."

By then, Davis was fitting in just fine in another plum role on another iconic television series, “Sex and the City.” That gravy train is churning again, as Davis has reprised Charlotte for the recent HBO Max reboot, “And Just Like That.”

But even the reboot wasn’t as sure a thing as one might expect.

As Davis told Corden, "With the new show, they also had to go pitch it. They had to convince HBO Max to do it again because now we're in our 50s, and people really don't do shows about women over their 50s. So we were all nervous and scared, but we really wanted to do it because we love it."
