Which airline will be the first to help the CDC with COVID contact tracing?

Airlines are doing their part to help slow the spread of COVID-19.

According to the New York Post, Delta reported that it would be the first United States airline to help trace international travelers’ contacts who traveled while infected with COVID-19.

On December 15, the airline will ask passengers flying to the United States from another country for important information that it will send to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. When flying, travelers will be asked to include their phone numbers, names, emails, and American addresses.

However, travelers will not be required to provide the info. Delta says this will help health officials notify passengers who have been around a person that tested positive for COVID-19.

“We want customers to feel safe when they return to travel, and this voluntary program is another way we can provide additional reassurance to customers and employees alike,” Bill Lentsch, Delta’s chief customer experience officer, said.

Under Delta’s new partnership with Rome’s airport, the contact-tracing program will be mandatory for people flying from Italy to the United States. The program allows travelers to enter Italy without quarantining if they test negative for the deadly virus.

Amid a nationwide surge in coronavirus hospitalizations and cases, Delta did not confirm nor deny whether it would expand its tracing efforts to flights within the United States.

Throughout the ongoing pandemic, Delta has made sure its passengers have been safe.

In November, nearly 550 people have been banned from taking future flights on Delta Airlines after they refused to wear facial coverings on board, according to the company’s CEO.

“Fortunately, that number represents a tiny fraction of our overall customers, the vast majority of whom follow our guidelines and appreciate the steps we are taking to keep them safe and healthy,” CEO Ed Bastian said.
