Zendaya is taking on the role of Lola Bunny in the rebooted Space Jam: A New Legacy, but the EMMY Award-winning actress has been surprised by how many people are upset with the cartoon bunny’s new, less sexualized, appearance.
The film’s director, Malcolm D. Lee aimed to “rework” Lola Bunny, feeling that she was heavily over-sexualized in the original 1996 Space Jam. However, her toned-down image has sparked discourse among fans. Lee told Entertainment Weekly, “I had no idea that people would be that up in arms about a bunny not having boobs.”
While in conversation with EW Zendaya explains that she was honored to take on the role of Lola Bunny, sharing, “I've always appreciated Lola because she's the only girl on the team, kind of holding it down for the ladies — and she's also an incredible player.”
“I'm glad they thought maybe I could use my voice and bring her to life. She's a badass bunny.”
The Euphoria star adds that she had no idea people would be so reactive to Lola Bunny’s new look and that a major conversation around Lola’s over-sexualization and the reworked image would be sparked online. She added, “I definitely know we love her, but I didn't know it was going to be as much of a focus as it was. But I understand, because she's a lovable character. She's very important, so I get it.”
In the interview, the actress concluded, “She's special to a lot of people and their childhoods and they've been able to grow up with her, so I get that sense of protection. I was like, listen, just as long as I did what the director and the producers and everybody wanted me to do, I'm just here to offer my services. No, but I felt really grateful just to have the opportunity.”
