The Foo Fighters frontman took part in an interview with The Independent and spoke about the band’s upcoming horror comedy film Studio 666 and how it comments on the current state of rock music.

Grohl isolates one scene in the movie where Jeff Garlin’s character says, “Rock ‘n’ roll hasn’t been relevant for a long time.” Grohl explains that “you have to define ‘relevant’” before divulging into his own experience.

“It’s hard for us to say that rock’n’roll is in a rough patch, because we get up on stage and there’ll be thousands of people f*****g going bananas and singing along to our songs,” he said.

Grohl then acknowledged that younger bands have it different than what the Foo Fighters do. Even without the traditional “rock” setup of guitars, bass, and drums, Grohl feels the spirit of rock is alive and well. “There’s a lot of great young bands that are f*****g killing it and have devoted fan bases,” he said. “They might not be as popular as Nicki Minaj, but honestly, when I see f***ing Billie Eilish, that’s rock’n’roll to me. She started a revolution and took over the world.”

Grohl has spoken glowingly about his love of Eilish’s music in the past and the impact she’s had on his daughters. “Oh my god man. Unbelievable,” he said at the time.

“My daughters are obsessed with Billie Eilish. And what I’m seeing happening with my daughters is the same revolution that happened to me at their age. My daughters are listening to Billie Eilish and they’re becoming themselves through her music. She totally connects to them.”

Grohl went on to compare the connection Eilish has with her audience to the one he and Nirvana had with their audience in 1991. “The people in the audience knew every word. And it was like our little secret,” he said.

“When I look at someone like Billie Eilish, I’m like… s*** man… rock n roll is not even close to being dead.”
