Sharing the story behind first hearing what just might be the song of the summer, the Pop icon recalled being in the studio and listening to “Padam Padam” as a demo. After pressing play, having “no idea what I’m gonna hear,” it took only one listen for Kylie to know this song was meant for her.
“I was just blown away, I thought ‘Wow! This songs amazing.' And what’s more, I felt like — this is my song… so I was just so excited to get my vocals on it.” Admitting that while she always hopes her songs will be received well, she had a feeling this one “would be a thing.”
No stranger to fan admiration, and chart topping hits, “Padam Padam"s influx of social media reaction videos is Kylie’s first ever experience with the trend of going viral.
“That is a first for me, absolute from outer space, surprise and thrill,” Kylie said of the online reaction. “It’s like every day for the last month someone will say ‘here’s one, have you seen this one?’ And it’s really become evident to me,” though she admittedly already knew it, “you can’t make that stuff happen, it just has to come from the people. And they’re doing it, and they’re loving it, and I’m having the time of my life.”
As a indisputable Queer icon, Corey mentioned how something from Kylie's catalog always makes the playlist. This song in particular is bringing so much joy and comfort to the Queer community during a tough time for LGBTQ+.
“I just want people to be seen, heard, loved,” as well as feel joy, Kylie shared about her intentions with the song and how its being accepted. “But I tell you, whatever I’m giving it out, it’s coming back so much more to me.” Going on to say, “So yeah, at a time when there’s so much confusion and uncertainty, one step forward and two steps back. I am really glad to be a constant amongst that.”
Also discussing her upcoming new album Tension, set to drop September 22, unlike previous projects Kylie creatively went into this one more openminded and with no theme in mind. “I think when we decided there is no theme that was really liberating. To just let the song do the talking,” and find out — “Does the song stand up on its own? Can it cohabitate with the other songs on the album?”
“Overall it was a great experience because of the deep dive and the chase to really enjoy that lyric, enjoy that beat, enjoy the melody, enjoy each song.” So while “there isn’t that theme that glues them all together, there’s a theme of live and let live… that song exists and its just happily next to that one.”
For more on how making this latest album differed from previous projects, and if she drew from “tension” in her own life as inspiration, as well as self-recording during the pandemic, and the new artists she’s fond of and following (Hint: it’s Raye), check out the entire conversation above.
