The 9 Best 'Between Two Ferns' Episodes With Zach Galifianakis

In the show's first episode, Galifianakis and his guest Michael Cera are two peas in the same awkward pod. The episode culminates in the weirdest horsing around you've ever seen, with Galifianakis asking his "Superbad" star guest if he's ticklish, and checking by reaching over to tickle his inner thigh.

It doesn't get much more awkward than Galifianakis having Portman on his public access-style talk show to ask for her phone number, and whether she needed a translator on the set of "Star Wars: Episode 1" to communicate with Chewbacca.

You'd think Galifianakis would have better chemistry with his "Hangover" bro, but when he starts this episode by introducing his guest as "someone named Bradley Cooper," it's clear there won't be much of a shift from the other "Ferns." Highlights include Zach telling Cooper he can't skate on his good looks alone and that what matters is "in here" -- on the wireless mics they wear that he repeatedly taps with his pen. Oh yeah, and Carrot Top in the background texting.

How does Galifianakis start his interview with then-president Barack Obama? "Sorry I had to cancel a few times," he says at the beginning. "My mouse pad broke last week, and I had to get my granddad some diabetes shoes." Obama dishes it out on his unexpected appearance, asking Zach if it made him sad to see a turkey that the president pardoned on Thanksgiving taken out of circulation, "one that you couldn't eat."

This hilarious episode was the next one after Obama's and begins with Zach telling an off-screen producer, "No, I'm just saying I interviewed the president last time and now I gotta go back to interviewing dumb actors." Brad Pitt plays it cool while Galifianakis offers to tell him when he lost his virginity and gives him an oh-so-mysterious bong-shaped gift. What could it be?

This is another one of those "Fern" episodes that make you wonder, "How did he get them on?" When the host gets in the Halloween spirit and sneaks on-screen with a skull mask to try and scare his guest, he's swiftly taken down by Secret Service agents.

If Galifianakis wasn't the host of "Between Two Ferns," it's hard to think of who better to host than Steve Carell. The "Office" star was ready to square off, which, in this battle of the minds, means fat jokes for Zach.

Zach interviewed a babyfaced Justin Bieber on "Ferns" in 2013, leaning heavily on the pop star's enfant terrible persona for his ammo. "Thank you, Justin, for being on," Galifianakis starts the interview. "It's really exciting to talk to you, especially right in the middle of your public meltdown."
