One man’s trash is another animal’s tasty holiday treat.
Instead of throwing out your Christmas tree this season, Michigan’s Lewis Adventure Farm and Zoo wants you to donate it to feed their herd of goats.
"Animals get the winter blues kind of too, so they like anything new and unusual. It's exciting for them," Jenny Ferels, brand ambassador at Lewis, told FOX 17.
"They like the taste of the pine needles," Ferels continued.
She explained that not only are you giving your tree a second life, but the snack features plenty of health benefits for the animals including “vitamin C.”
“It's a natural de-wormer for goats too,” she noted.
The farm’s tradition of feeding their herd of over 40 goats began nearly 15 years ago.
Prior to making a donation, the farm asks that all decorations be removed from the tree. They are also requesting trees without tinsel or flocking, an artificial snow that covers branches.
While not all animals will enjoy the “pokey pine needles,” Ferels explained that “a goat has a really hard mouth, so they're able to easily eat the pine needles."
Trees can be dropped off at the farm’s front driveway. More information can be found at their website and Facebook page.
